Summary

A leading German healthcare and pharmaceutical company partnered with Marlabs to modernize its lab environments through IoT, automation, predictive maintenance, and mobile-first tools. Marlabs developed a custom life sciences IoT platform and a digital lab management system, enabling real-time device connectivity, mobile-based lab management, and predictive analytics. The result was a significant reduction in manual effort, improved productivity, faster experiment turnaround times, and increased customer retention.

Challenge

The client needed to transition from manual, disconnected lab environments to a fully digitized system that connected lab equipment, enabled real-time data capture, and improved experiment efficiency. Without modernization, the lab ecosystem was slow, error-prone, and lacked predictive insights into equipment performance. Manual processes, disconnected equipment, and a lack of visibility slowed both experiments and maintenance operations, creating significant operational bottlenecks across global lab locations.

The client's objective was clear: create real-time digital lab environments with predictive maintenance, device connectivity, and mobile enablement. The solution required a scalable IoT platform and a mobile lab management system with analytics, security, and real-time device control. Achieving this would allow the client to deliver automated, connected labs that improved productivity, compliance, and customer satisfaction.

Solution

IoT architecture and device connectivity

To lay the foundation for a connected lab ecosystem, Marlabs designed an end-to-end IoT platform supporting HTTPS and MQTT protocols to connect all lab devices globally. The team focused on three core workstreams: device management, secure data transmission, and core IoT platform architecture. This infrastructure provided the backbone for real-time visibility and control across the client's global network of lab equipment.

Analytics and predictive maintenance

With device connectivity established, Marlabs implemented an analytics engine to monitor equipment health and enable predictive maintenance. The engine addressed key workstreams including equipment tracking, predictive modeling, and data monetization. By generating timely insights into equipment performance, this component allowed the client to service devices proactively and reduce unexpected downtime across its lab operations.

Mobile app design and development

To put lab management capabilities directly in the hands of scientists, Marlabs developed native iOS and Android applications. These mobile tools allowed lab professionals to manage experiments, record data, and request lab materials from anywhere. The team's workstreams spanned mobile UX/UI design, native app architecture, and image and material scanning features, resulting in an intuitive mobile experience tailored to the needs of life sciences researchers.

Lab management web platform

Complementing the mobile applications, Marlabs created a companion web application to support experiment tracking, data capture, and secure storage. The platform was built around three workstreams: experiment logging, lab drive integration, and role-based access control. Together with the mobile apps, this web platform gave lab professionals a comprehensive, secure, and flexible digital environment for managing their day-to-day research workflows.

Results

The solutions transformed the client's lab operations by delivering automated workflows, connected devices, and predictive insights. Marlabs helped reduce manual effort, improve turnaround times, and ensure regulatory compliance. The solutions enabled scientists to conduct experiments more effectively and positioned the client for continued digital growth in life sciences innovation.
